Towne Square is turning into one big picnic on Sunday, August 2, and everyone's invited. Local food company Locado is hosting the afternoon on the downtown green from 11am to 2pm, and it's free to attend.

The lineup is built for staying a while: live performances from local artists all afternoon, a farm-to-table food truck serving fresh Ontario eats, and market vendors featuring producers and makers from around the province. There are yard games for all ages, local artists showing their work, and plenty of room to spread out on the grass.

Locado runs on the same idea the picnic does, connecting Oakville with food grown and made close to home. Come with family, friends, or just yourself and a good book. Spots are free but they're asking you to register ahead so they know how many to expect.

All you need to bring is a blanket.

The Swiss Chalet and Harvey's on Cross Avenue across from Oakville GO station have closed after more than 20 years, leaving longtime customers surprised and disappointed. A note at the drive-thru directs people to three other Oakville locations, but many say they didn't get a chance to say goodbye to staff who'd worked there for years.

The closure is part of the Midtown Oakville Transit-Oriented Community project, one of the largest redevelopments in town history. The plan calls for 11 high-rise towers and roughly 6,880 residential units on lands around Cross Avenue and Argus Road. The nearby McDonald's and other commercial properties are also expected to be affected.

The redevelopment is expected to take decades, with construction phased over time.

The Oakville Film Festival wrapped its 13th year earlier this month, and the winners are in. Leading the list was The Golden Spurtle, a U.K./Australia comedy documentary about the world porridge championship, which took home two awards: Best International Feature and Best International Director.

The other big winner was The Little Town that Could, a Canadian short about the making of Schitt's Creek. It also earned two prizes, Best Student Film and, in a festival first, the audience choice award for Best Short Film.

The festival screened over 100 films both in-person and online from June 17–27, with awards presented at a ceremony at the downtown Oakville Public Library branch last month.

Beans is a six-month-old Belgian Malinois–Shepherd mix at the Oakville & Milton Humane Society. He's smart and full of energy, already knows a "place" cue and settles on his mat, and loves a good tug toy. Like most puppies, he's still learning leash manners and housetraining.

He needs an active home with a fenced yard and some experience with working or herding breeds. Kids 16+ are best, and he could live with an easygoing dog, but no small pets. One note: Beans is a behind-the-scenes dog, so there are no viewings, just the application.

If you can keep up with him, he's ready to go.

Two White Oaks Secondary School graduates just pulled off something only a handful of students manage worldwide: perfect scores on their International Baccalaureate diploma exams.

Kaiya Ajmera and Zoe Vasilijevic both scored 45 out of 45 points, earning top marks in all six subject areas plus an A in both the Theory of Knowledge course and the Extended Essay. The achievement comes as White Oaks prepares to mark 20 years of offering IB programming this fall.
