Pumpkin Carving At Oakville Galleries 🎃

Oakville Galleries

This Saturday, October 17th, Oakville Galleries is inviting amateurs and aspiring Michelangelos alike to their Gairloch Gardens studio space for some family-friendly pumpkin carving.

Visitors are asked to bring their own pumpkin to this drop-in style workshop where carving tools will be provided. The event costs $10 per family, and will run from 10am until 2pm. In addition to pumpkin carving there will be a Halloween craft station for kids, plus hot chocolate and treats, and classic Halloween movies will play in the background, so there will be plenty of fuel and inspiration for your next jack-o’-lantern masterpiece!

Walk This Weekend To Support HSOMH 🐕‍🦺

The ear of every dog perks right up whenever someone says the word “walk”, and this Sunday, October 18th there will be even more reason for our canine friends to get excited, because the “Wiggle Waggle Walk” fundraiser is happening at River Oaks Community Centre in support of the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton, and Halton.

The walk will start at 10am, and participants can choose between 2km and 4km routes. Everyone receives a free commemorative bandana, and prizes will be given to individuals and teams who reach certain fundraising benchmarks. Money raised by this event will help the HSOMH continue their important work supporting vulnerable animals in the community, which is certainly a cause worthy of some happy tail waggling!

Volunteer With The Oakville Santa Claus Parade 🎅🏻

Can you hear the sound of jingle bells and Bruce Springsteen’s gravelly voice in the distance? All signs indicate that Santa Claus will indeed be coming to town again this year, which is why Oakville is now looking for volunteers to help with the town’s annual Santa Claus Parade.

This year’s parade date is Saturday, November 14th, with the theme of “North Pole Sweets and Treats”. Volunteers are needed to support parade operations, to help with event set-up and take-down, and to create a safe and festive atmosphere for everyone. Costumed character roles are open to those aged 14+, while parade marshals and escorts must be at least 16.

Applications for volunteers are available online and open until Monday, October 26th, so there’s still time for anyone who wants to “be good for goodness sake!”

The Bronte Dog Library’s Howl-O-Ween Costume Contest 🐶

@BronteDogLibrary on Instagram

Near the corner of Lakeshore Road and West Street there is a rather unique little library where the “shelves” are filled not with books but with sturdy sticks and tennis balls. This is the Bronte Dog Library, which has recently become a favourite stop and photo op for many of the neighbourhood’s furry friends.

Now they’re adding a seasonal twist to the fun with a Howl-O-Ween Costume Contest, where pups are invited to stop by the library in costume, snap a pic, and tag the Bronte Dog Library Instagram account before October 31st for a chance to win a gift card to Tail Blazers, the local pet supply company. They might not be a traditional library, but they’re lending out all kinds of reasons to smile!

Tree Planting At Arbourview Park 🌳

Oakvillegreen’s third major tree planting event of the fall will take place at Arbourview Park on Saturday, October 17th. Shovels will start to break ground at 10am, in a group effort to plant native trees and shrubs. High school students who attend will be eligible to receive volunteer hours.

The local environmental charity has already hosted successful tree plantings at the Valleyridge and Buttonbush Woods parks earlier this season, and are looking to do more good work before the ground freezes. As the old saying goes, the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, but the second best time is right now!
