Asian Night Market Debuts 🎉

Photo from nightmarkets.ca

Oakville is getting its first-ever Asian night market this summer and it begins on Friday. The three-day festival runs Friday July 10 through Sunday July 12 at Sheridan College's Trafalgar campus (the same venue as Ribfest), bringing Asian street food, artisan vendors, and live entertainment to Oakville for the weekend.

Organizers are calling it a landmark event for Halton Region, part of a wider Ontario Asian Night Market Series hitting communities across the province. Friday hours run 5pm to 11pm, with Saturday and Sunday opening at noon and running until 11pm. Parking is free.

The festival is still booking vendors across food, dessert, wellness, and cultural merchandise categories. Applications are open now through [email protected].

Upper Middle Resurfacing 🚧

Parts of Upper Middle Road in east Oakville has been seeing increased traffic delays as Halton Region works through a month-long resurfacing project.

The work started June 22 and runs between Trafalgar Road and Joshuas Creek Drive. It's expected to wrap up by Friday, July 24.

Because of this construction, one of Oakville’s busiest roads has been temporarily reduced to just one lane between 7 am to 6 pm, and drivers should expect delays at different sections along the stretch.

Halton says the resurfacing is part of routine maintenance to extend the life of roads across the region, and will “make every effort” to wrap up construction as quickly possible.

New Rule Changes for Tenants 🏠

A timely new law is now in place that will help renters stay cool amidst the intense Ontario heat. Oakville tenants now have an explicit right to install window or portable air conditioning units in their rental homes, under a new provincial law that took effect July 1st.

The change, part of a 2023 law, allows renters to set up cooling if their landlord doesn't already provide it, and includes conditions on installation and use.

This is one of several legislative changes that took effect this week, including changes to cancer screening ages, auto insurance benefits, driver’s licence exchange agreements, and more.

Oakville’s Oldest Butcher 🏆

Wolfgang Ordung (left)

Sixteen years ago, Wolfgang Ordung failed at retirement. Today, he is 90 years old working behind the counter at Florence Meats in Oakville.

Local Wolfgang Ordung is a German-born butcher who ran his own shop in Oakville called Mari’s Delicatessen for 38 years before retiring, then un-retired a decade and a half later because he missed the daily rhythm of the shop floor.

This realization brought him to Florence meats, where he has been an integral part of the business for the last 16 years. He is cherished by both staff and customers for his work ethic, sense of humour, and and passion for the community.

Florence Meats threw him an appreciation party on Saturday, recognizing his birthday and his years serving the community. The theme was "Hungry Like The Wolf", with Ordung himself serving German-inspired sausages as a nod to his time in Germany before immigrating to Canada in 1959.

Saturday featured a stream of regulars coming through with gifts and birthday wishes, and the event was also a fundraiser in support for Oakville's Lighthouse for Grieving Children.

OCF Awards $50K+ to Students 🎓

The Oakville Community Foundation has awarded more than $50,000 to 24 local students heading to post-secondary school this fall. The money comes from four scholarships created through the foundation's Community Education Awards Hub, an online portal that connects students with Oakville-based awards.

Most of the recipients received $2,000 each through the Oakville Youth Education Award, funded by local philanthropists including the Miller Family Foundation and the Augy & Anna Carnovale Foundation. Three students received individual awards for mental health, family foundation support, and education kickstart funding.

Since launching in 2020, the Awards Hub has handed out over $2.2 million to local students.
