Volunteer With Oakvillegreen 🌿

Trafalgar Wildflower Garden, Sheridan College | Oakville Green

Did you know the pollinator gardens in Oakville's parks are planted and weeded by residents who sign up online? Oakvillegreen Conservation Association runs free volunteer events around town, and the full list is available on their site.

Volunteers meet on Tuesday mornings to weed, plant, and mulch the charity's nine pollinator gardens. Two are left this season: August 11 at Kingsford Gardens (2480 Sherwood Heights Dr) and August 18 at Glen Abbey (1415 Third Line), both 9:30 to 11am.

There are also three tree plantings booked: Buttonbush Woods on September 26, Arbourview Park on October 17, and Valleyridge Park on October 24, each 10am to noon. They go ahead rain or shine, and high school students get volunteer hours. And on September 10 at 6pm there's a family walk to see Oakville's giant white pines, some of them older than the town.

Oakville Remembers Marc Grant 💜

Oakville residents and local leaders gathered at Town Hall on Saturday to celebrate the life of Ward 5 councillor Marc Grant, who passed away in late July after 23 years on council. Attendees wore purple in his honour as family, friends, and colleagues shared stories and condolences.

Grant's daughter Mackenzie recalled funny moments with her father and the life lessons he taught her about showing up for others and living with kindness. Ward 5 councillor Jeff Knoll, Grant's best friend for 25 years, reminded the room not to wait to tell people they matter.

Mayor Rob Burton called Grant the spokesperson for transit, gathering spaces, and food security, issues the late councillor championed when others were distracted. Burton also announced that Knoll plans to bring forward a motion to rename Ridgeview Park after Grant.

Algonquin Power Leaving Oakville 🏢

Google Street View Image

Algonquin Power & Utilities is moving its head office from Oakville to Chicago. The energy company is shifting focus to its U.S. utility operations, which now make up more than 80 per cent of its business.

The company's Canadian headquarters is at 354 Davis Road, a six-storey building beside the Oakville GO station. Algonquin hasn't said how much of the building it occupies, how many employees work there, or whether staff will move to Chicago.

The company says it will keep a significant Canadian presence, but it's unclear what happens to the Oakville property, which Algonquin owns through subsidiaries.

Teen Fire Academy Returns 🚒

Twenty-four teens suited up at the Oakville Fire Training Campus this week for Blaze Fire Academy, a two-day program run by Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills fire departments. This year's program was for teen girls between the ages of 15 to 18 where they learned how to handle fire hoses, break car windshields during rescues, and climb ladders with oxygen tanks.

Aleena Rizwan, 16, got interested through Sea Cadets. Her biggest takeaway? Teamwork goes deeper than just the suppression team, she said, pointing to the dispatch service and public safety work that happen behind the scenes.

The camp started as Camp Molly in 2019 and has since expanded to serve new Canadians and career switchers. It's open to Halton residents in good physical condition, no experience required.
