Locado: Picnics & Local Ingredients 🍽

An Oakville company is trying to solve a problem a lot of people know: you want to buy fresh food from local farms, but getting to the actual farms takes time. Locado, an online marketplace connecting customers with small-batch farmers and bakers, officially pre-launched in March and now delivers weekly orders across Oakville, Burlington, Milton, Mississauga and parts of the west GTA.

Co-founders Nicholas "Nico" Mingorance-Geraldo and Madison Lo built the platform after Nico spent months trying to source quality food from farms the way his family used to. Orders placed by Monday arrive Thursdays, timed to farmers' production schedules so ingredients are harvested closer to delivery.

Last week we covered how Locado was planning to host “Oakville’s Largest Picnic” yesterday, but the rain forced them to postpone the event. The good news: they are rescheduling with plans to make it bigger and better.

The event is now planned for Oakville Towne Square on Saturday, September 12 from 11am to 2pm, with live performances all afternoon, a farm-to-table food truck, a market of Ontario producers and makers, local artists showing their work, and yard games for all ages.

A Night at the Haunted Farmhouse 👻

Bronte Creek Image

Bronte Creek's 1899 farmhouse is opening its doors after dark for Ghost Walks, running two nights only, this Friday and Saturday, August 7 and 8. Lit by oil lamps and staged room by room, Spruce Lane Farm trades its usual daytime charm for the eerier side of Victorian life.

Guides walk you through the strange customs Victorians kept around death, then share the staff's own stories of unexplained happenings inside the house. It's built to spook, not terrify, the tours are meant to educate rather than send anyone running for the parking lot, so the curious kids are welcome too.

Walks run 7 to 9pm both nights and last roughly 45 minutes, with a new group heading out every 15 minutes from 7:30 and the last one leaving just before 9. No registration needed, and the whole thing is covered by the regular $21 daily vehicle pass.

Oakville Charity Sends Medical Aid 💝

Health Partners International Canada, a charity headquartered in Oakville, has sent $1.4 million in medical supplies to Lebanon, where the healthcare system is under heavy strain from conflict and mass displacement.

The shipment arrived in Beirut after Lebanon's Ministry of Public Health sent HPIC an emergency letter warning its health sector wouldn't survive the crisis without outside help. It carried 134,000 items, about 4.6 tonnes in all: wound care, infection treatments, and medications people with chronic conditions depend on. Partners on the ground are now moving the supplies to the hospitals that need them most.

This is the first of more to come. HPIC says over $1 million in additional supplies is being packed at its Oakville distribution centre right now, set to leave in the coming days. For anyone who wants to pitch in, the charity says every $10 donated delivers $100 worth of medicine, and it's raising toward a $200,000 goal to cover the shipping.

Backyard Cardinal Visits Daily 🌳

Someone in Oakville is sharing their morning routine with a regular visitor. A Northern Cardinal stops by their backyard for a snack every day, and the homeowner caught it on video this week.

The reddit post invites other residents to share their own bird sightings in the area, turning the thread into a community spot-check of what's visiting local feeders and yards right now.
