Parkway Bridge Misses Deadline Again

The town is looking for a dozen young artists to design and paint a new mural at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex this fall. The Youth Mural Project is back for its fourth year, this time bringing colour to one of Oakville's busiest rec centres.

Local artist Sima Naseem will mentor 12 teens aged 13 to 17 through the whole process, from design workshops to painting the final piece. Participants earn 42 volunteer hours and no art experience is required.

Past murals have landed at Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre, River Oaks, and Iroquois Ridge. Applications close August 31.

A new bridge over Sixteen Mile Creek in north Oakville is almost done, but Halton Region still won't say when it will open. The bridge is the final piece of the $79.9 million William Halton Parkway extension, a project that started in 2018 to ease traffic across the north end of town.

Right now, drivers heading east along the parkway have to detour at Third Line, and those going west detour at Neyagawa Boulevard, because the bridge between Harasym Trail and Fourth Line remains under construction. The region says the contractor is wrapping up final testing and inspections, but the project has already missed two deadlines, it was supposed to be done in 2024, then June of this year.

The region says the project is still on budget and promises a revised completion date soon.

Hundreds of artists from Oakville and across Ontario gathered at Bronte Heritage Waterfront Park on Monday for the Oakville Art Society's annual Art in the Park event, now in its 61st year. Thousands turned out to browse and buy everything from oil paintings and ceramics to photography and fine jewellery.

Event coordinator Barbara Chapman says the show brings artists from hours away, some returning year after year. "We always make room for new artists also," she says. The show wrapped at 5pm Monday.

Art in the Park has been running in town since 1965, turning Bronte Harbour into a one-day outdoor gallery every summer.

Fess is a 3-year-old Siamese looking for a home that will move at his speed. He is shy, he is cautious, and he is still working out whether people can be trusted.

He is not the cat who meets you at the door. He watches from a safe spot first, and the shelter says the way to reach him is a quiet house, gentle handling, and an adopter who respects his boundaries while he figures it out. Nobody rushes him.

You might already know his story. Fess was one of the 27 cats and kittens pulled from a Milton home back in May, the rescue Milton resident deadmau5 paid for, and his name was picked by the musician and his fans. He is now waiting on the right person to take him home.
