Residents Call On Province To Pause Midtown Development 🏢

Infrastructure Ontario

After the revelations of last month’s Toronto Star investigation into the planned 11 tower condo development near the GO Station, the Oakville Community Association has sent a five page letter to Ontario’s Minister of Infrastructure asking the Province to pause the development until it can be proven that the chosen developer is qualified to do the job

The Star’s investigation into Distrikt Development raised questions about their level of experience, detailing a history of legal and financial battles, along with a recent project that collapsed into receivership without ever breaking ground.

While Distrikt insists that they’re qualified to fulfill their role as a “minority partner” set to “lead the development process”, the OCA is calling for a hold on the project until an independent review is completed, adding that the Province should consider revoking the controversial minister’s zoning order that fast-tracked the development in the first place.

Halton Police Board Debates E-Scooter Rules Enforcement 🛴

With hospitals across the country seeing an increase in e-scooter related injuries while the vehicles become more popular with children under 16 (who are not legally allowed to operate them under Ontario’s current framework) the Halton Police Board considered the question of how to best enforce safety rules when it comes to e-scooters at their recent August meeting.

Though Halton Regional Police Chief Steve Tanner described the scooters as “a public safety concern, no doubt” he also cautioned against any heavy-handed approach that would have police officers regularly stopping and charging children. Councillors from Oakville, Milton, and Burlington called for more parental education, collaboration with schools, and better guidance from Queen’s Park.

The issue will be further discussed at the Board’s next meeting later this month.

Get Ready For The Election With Town Of Oakville’s Online Tool 🗳️

Ahead of the October 26th Municipal Election, the Town is offering residents the chance to make sure that their names and addresses are up to date on the voter’s list. This is the list that will soon be used to mail information regarding where and when to vote.

Oakville residents can check to see how their information appears on the voter’s list using the Town’s Am I On The List online tool. There they can confirm or update the information, with government-issued identification required for any updates.

The tool also links voters with the list of mayoral candidates, as well as a list of councillor candidates for their specific ward. Anyone in need of further assistance is urged to contact the Town of Oakville’s Clerk’s Department.

Just Announced: Acorn Fest Is Back! 🌰

Downtown Oakville

Charlie Brown may have his Great Pumpkin to get excited about in the fall, but in Oakville we have a gigantic autumnal motif of our own to celebrate the season with. Yes, Acorn Fest is coming back to town for its second year, which means Downtown will soon be a site for live music, seasonal fun, and one enormous acorn.

Presented by the Downtown Oakville BIA, the festival will take place on October 2nd and 3rd. Friday will feature live country music and an outdoor movie, while Saturday promises dance lessons, stilt walkers, and “The Ultimate Falconry Experience”. A full event schedule is still to come.

The turnout for last year’s festival far exceeded anyone’s expectations, so there’s even more excitement for this second Acorn Fest. In a town named in honour of the mighty oak tree, festival organizers are right to say “we’re nuts about fall!”

Team With Oakville Ties Close To Final Leg of Amazing Race Canada 🌎

The Amazing Race Canada is nearing the end of its 12th season, and of the four teams left competing through its final legs, one features an Oakville local! Corporate lawyer Tina Liao is racing in a duo with her twin sister Liz Liao, who hails from Waterdown.

The twins spent the first 17 years of their lives functioning as one unit, but even after attending different universities and growing independently, they shared the dream of one day competing on the Amazing Race Canada together. This summer they’ve been living out that dream with a series of impressive performances, including winning the eighth and most recent leg of the race

Though she’s now seen many of Canada’s most beautiful and interesting places, Tina still thinks there’s no place like home, citing the Edgemere Promenade as one of her favourite places and adding, “We’re so lucky to live in Oakville, and to be steps away from the lake.”
