Oakville GO station is entering the next phase of a major transformation, with one of the biggest changes starting the week of August 3. A temporary Platform 1 opens while the existing platform closes for construction, with passengers directed to use pedestrian tunnels and follow new signage.

The station serves more than 10,270 customers daily, making it the busiest GO station in Ontario outside of Toronto. The upgrades include new accessible platforms, a pedestrian bridge with four elevators, six additional bus platforms, and parking improvements.

Some construction impacts are already in place. The southeast pick-up and drop-off area is closed, with drivers redirected to the north or southwest zones. About 100 parking spaces in the north lot are unavailable, with another 40 closing once Platform 1 work begins.

A new seniors centre in north Oakville is getting a $55,000 boost from the province to launch programs for older adults across Halton.

The North Oakville Seniors Active Living Centre inside the new Sixteen Mile Sports Complex at 3070 Neyagawa Boulevard will use the funds to offer fitness classes, drop-in card and board games, and wellness activities designed for a range of abilities. The centre will also host special events, holiday celebrations, and a Friendship Luncheon program where seniors can connect over meals.

Oakville North-Burlington MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos announced the investment on Thursday. The money is part of a larger $23 million provincial push to support 416 seniors centres across Ontario.

A scaled-back proposal to build four residential towers next to Bronte GO Station is headed to a public meeting on August 10, giving residents a chance to weigh in before council decides whether to approve it.

The latest version calls for towers ranging from 21 to 24 storeys, down from an earlier pitch that topped out at 35 storeys. The development would bring 1,191 apartments, retail space, a daycare, and two new streets to the industrial property at 2172 Wyecroft Road, just west of Third Line.

The Bronte Village Residents' Association has raised concerns about height and density since 2024, and residents pushed back on parking and community benefits at a council discussion last December.

The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall.

Twenty young entrepreneurs filled Halton Black Voices' Third Space Friday night for the inaugural Black Youth Creative Market, celebrating Black youth business owners between the ages of 10 and 17.

The vendors sold everything from handmade jewellery and baked goods to artwork and books they wrote themselves. Ten-year-old Hikmah Meshimo sold handmade bracelets and necklaces she's been making since age six. Brothers David and Joshua Munkoh sold copies of their own children's adventure book, Force Boy: And The Giant Mech Of Mecha Boy.

Organizer Abi Adekitan originally hoped for 10 to 12 vendors but was overwhelmed by the response. The market is already being planned as an annual event.

Ethan Belchetz and Dima Zhilkin are in Windsor this week representing Canada at the World Junior Summer Showcase, where 32 players are competing for spots on the national team ahead of December's World Junior Hockey Championships.

Belchetz, a first-round pick by the Utah Mammoth and former Oakville Ranger, is a power forward heading to Michigan State after two seasons with the Windsor Spitfires.

Zhilkin, captain of the Saginaw Spirit, put up 36 goals and 75 points in 59 games this past season and scored five goals at the recent U-18 World Championships.

The camp runs all week, with Canada playing Sweden on Wednesday, Finland on Thursday, and the U.S. on Saturday. Both are looking to impress as Canada chases its first gold medal at the tournament in three years.
