Food Trucks By The Water 🚚

canadianfoodtruckfestivals website

Food trucks are fun right? How about a whole bunch of them together in the same place, with a lakefront view to enjoy while you eat and drink?

If that sounds like a good time then you do not want to miss the Oakville Food Truck Festival which is returning for two days this July, bringing 30 food trucks to Bronte Heritage Waterfront Park. The event runs Saturday, July 11 from noon to 10pm and Sunday, July 12 from noon to 9pm.

Admission is free, with cold beer, local performers, and kids' games on site. The trucks offer vegetarian, halal, and gluten-free options, and all accept debit and credit.

Shape Oakville's Cultural Future 🎨

The town is updating its cultural plan for 2027 to 2031 and wants to hear from residents who live, work, or create in Oakville.

The town is developing a renewed plan that sets a vision for Oakville's cultural future over the next five years. An online survey is open until August 31 and takes about 10 minutes to complete.

The survey asks residents about their perspective on Oakville’s cultural identity, thoughts and participation on town-hosted events, and how Oakville can continue to improve the role that arts & culture plays locally.

Residents looking to share more can register for a free in-person memory mapping workshop on July 30 at Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre from 4 to 6 p.m.

The town is also gathering input at community events this month, including Wednesday’s Canada Day, Summer Splash, and farmers' markets.

GO Proposes Bigger Fines 🎟️

Forgetting to buy a train ticket on the way to your next Jays game could soon cost you a lot more.

Metrolinx is proposing a major jump in penalties for fare evasion on GO Transit and UP Express. If the board approves the changes this Thursday, a first offence would rise from $35 to $200, with repeat offenders facing fines as high as $1,000.

The agency says the higher penalties, combined with increased inspections, would help recover lost revenue. Fare evasion across the network sat at about five per cent this past fiscal year, and Metrolinx estimates every percentage point drop brings in roughly $4.3 million.

If approved, the new structure would take effect September 8, giving the agency time to update systems and launch a public awareness campaign. Revenue protection officers conducted a record 1.56 million onboard inspections last year, a nearly 30 per cent increase from the year before.

Canada Day Crowds Fill Bronte 🇨🇦

A thunderstorm couldn't stop the party. After an hour-and-a-half rain delay early on, tens of thousands of people turned out at Bronte Heritage Waterfront Park on Wednesday night to celebrate Canada's 159th birthday.

The crowd was thin at first while attendees sheltered in place, but filled in fast after 7 p.m. once the all-clear came through. The park brought back all the usual touchstones: fireworks, live music on the main stage, food trucks, and a kids' zone with crafts, lawn games, and inflatables.

Police said a few arrests were made but no major incidents were reported, a relief after earlier threats of cancellation over safety concerns.

Patriotic Pancakes 🥞

Earlier in the day and before the fireworks, North Oakville kicked off Canada Day with pancakes, music, and community spirit at the Oak Park Neighbourhood Centre on Wednesday morning. Ward 5 Councillor Jeff Knoll hosted his annual pancake breakfast, joined by fellow councillors Marc Grant, Scott Xie, Tom Adams, and Natalia Lishchyna, who cooked for guests despite the heat.

The event included a recitation of the Canadian Oath of Citizenship, the same pledge new Canadians take at their ceremonies. Knoll says the tradition helps native-born residents reflect on their luck and understand what newcomers pledge when joining the country.

Families gathered outdoors for games and food as part of the town's broader Canada Day programming. Knoll calls the early breakfast a "project of passion" that sets the tone for the rest of the day's celebrations across Oakville.
