Oakville’s Fair & Festival Filled Weekend 🎪

Images taken from Art In My Garden, Visit Oakville, & Jenkins Show Productions

Here at the Oakville Digest we try to keep our readers up to date on things that are happening around town, and this upcoming weekend it seems like everything is happening at once with four major events set to take place between today and Sunday

The Oakville Lifestyle Fall Home Show will open first this afternoon at the Glen Abbey Community Centre, where all weekend long experts in renovations and decor will be on hand to guide and inspire all kinds of home projects. Later tonight, Kerrfest will kick off its annual celebration of live music and local businesses with a lineup that promises to keep rocking throughout the weekend.

Saturday afternoon will bring the sixth annual Art In My Garden exhibition, when historic Old Oakville becomes even more picturesque with outdoor displays featuring more than 70 artists. Meanwhile the Oak Park Fall Fair will be in full swing, offering bouncy castles, exhibitions, BBQ dinners, and a movie under the stars.

Go to one or go to all, there’s fun to be had for everyone in Oakville this weekend!

Interim Ward 5 Councillor Appointed ☑️

Oakville’s Town Council has appointed Jamie Bay to serve as the Ward 5 Town Councillor for the balance of the current term. Bay will fill the vacant seat left behind by longtime Councillor Marc Grant, who passed away in July.

Bay is a pastor who “has called Ward 5 home for nearly 20 years and has deep roots in our community”, according to fellow Ward 5 representative Jeff Knoll. Mayor Rob Burton says the appointment “both honours [Marc Grant’s] memory and ensures Ward 5 representation is maintained.”

Trafalgar Park Rink To Be Renamed In Honour Of Otto Jelinek ⛸️

The rink at the Trafalgar Park Community Centre will soon bear the name of one of the greatest to ever take to its ice, as Town Council has voted to rename it after former pairs figure skating world champion Otto Jelinek.

Jelinek trained at the facility with the Oakville Skating Club alongside his sister after the family left Czechoslovakia in 1948. The pair went on to represent Canada at the 1960 Olympics, and then win the pairs figure skating world championship in 1962. After hanging up his skates, Jelinek represented Oakville voters as the MP for Halton riding from 1979 to 1988, and later served as the Canadian Ambassador to the Czech Republic.

Last week, Otto Jelinek passed away peacefully at the age of 86. Having represented his town and country in so many ways at both the national and international level throughout his life, it is only fitting that the Jelinek name will continue to stand for sport and community here in Oakville.

Seniors Services Open House Happening Next Week 🔑

Town of Oakville

They say that Senior Citizens are living in their golden years, and there’s nowhere more golden to be a Senior than Oakville!

On Tuesday, September 15th from 9:30 until noon, this year’s Oakville Senior Services Open House will be held at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex, where the Town has opened its newest Older Adults Centre. Attendees will have the chance to tour the facility as well as learn about the programs, special events, and drop-in activities available at each of Oakville’s six seniors centres.

Between fitness classes, music lessons, bridge, art, woodworking and more, Oakville’s Senior Services offer something for everyone. This year’s Open House is a great chance to learn more about all of the new opportunities that getting older can bring.

Terry Fox Flag Raised At Town Hall 🇨🇦

The 46th annual Terry Fox Run will happen on Sunday, September 20th, and Oakville has recognized the impending important occasion by raising a special Terry Fox flag outside of Town Hall

The flag raising happened on Wednesday when members of the Oakville Terry Fox Run committee met with Town officials and other community leaders to hoist a red-bordered flag emblazoned with a black and white picture of Terry Fox along with text declaring “Terry Fox Lives Here”. Joining the group were members of Terry’s Team, proudly donning the red shirts worn by cancer survivors as a symbol of hope and courage.

The flag is a reminder of Terry’s incredible legacy, and it’s also an encouraging invitation to all in the community to come participate on Run Day (Coronation Park, registration begins at 9am) where they can be a part of the enduring Marathon of Hope.
