Oakville’s Tina Liao Wins The Amazing Race Canada

The Amazing Race Canada just concluded its 12th mad dash across the country and the first team to cross the finish line (or to meet Jon Montgomery at The Final Mat, to use the show’s term) was a sister duo featuring Oakville’s very own Tina Liao! 

Competing with her identical twin Liz Liao, the sisters were living their dream all season long, having been superfans of the show since they were kids. Now having raced around Canada from the peaks of Whistler to the bays of New Brunswick, Tina will return to Oakville with her share of the $250,000 winnings, a mountain of Expedia travel credits, and an incredible story of victory to tell!

The Terry Fox Run has been a cherished fall tradition for Canadians of all ages since it began back in 1981. This year’s run is happening on Sunday (September 20th) and Oakville will once again be among the more than 650 communities across the country coming together to fundraise for cancer research.  

Our Oakville event will take place at Coronation Park, with registration opening at 9am before the run starts at 10am. The race is non-competitive, and open to runners of any ability, as well as walkers, rollers, and cyclists. Participants can choose between route distances of 2km, 5km, and 10km. 

To help accommodate the enthusiastic crowds that always show up for the Oakville Terry Fox Run, a free shuttle will be running between the Bronte GO Station and Coronation Park every 15 minutes.  

Developer Westerkirk Capital Inc. introduced plans for a large-scale development in North Oakville at last week’s planning and development council meeting. Their proposal would see 27 buildings between three and 30 storeys built in the blocks around 340 Burnhamthorpe Rd East, the property where Vic Hadfield’s Golf and Learning Centre is currently.  

Many council members were skeptical about the project, and had questions about infrastructure, affordable housing, and how the market might change during the 15-20 year construction timeline. 

The proposal will be further considered at a later date, after consultations with Town staff and Conservation Halton. 

At 10am today the Town will raise the “Culture Days” flag outside of Town Hall, officially launching the national month long celebration of art, culture, and creativity. 

Many of the festival highlights will take place around three “Culture Day Hubs”: The Queen Elizabeth Park Culture & Community Centre, The Oakville Museum, and the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, where workshops, demonstrations, and performances will expose visitors to all different kinds of art, from the symphony to wood burning to digital photography. More events will take place across the town throughout the month.     

The best thing about Culture Days, besides the opportunity to explore new expressions of creativity? Every program and activity is completely free, in keeping with the festival’s philosophy that art truly is for everyone.  

This December, Oakville Galleries will launch The Atelier: Craft Fair, a two-day curated market at Gairloch Gardens featuring handmade goods and creative gifts, perfectly timed for the winter holiday shopping season.

Oakville Galleries is inviting interested artisans to apply now to be a part of this exciting inaugural event. They’re looking for work that demonstrates quality and originality, and they hope to bring together a diverse range of vendors and products. Every application will be considered carefully in a juried process, as the Oakville Galleries team works to bring their vision of The Atelier: Craft Fair to life.
