New Student-Athlete Program Coming To Oakville

This past Friday marked 25 years since 9/11, and while the solemn occasion was commemorated with large memorials in New York City and Gander, Newfoundland, the Oakville Fire Department organized their own unique way to honour the many lives lost on that tragic day. 

Firefighters from the department gathered at their Training Centre For Emergency Excellence to observe a moment of silence, and then read the names of the 343 FDNY members who died in the line of duty. Following the ceremony they took to the training tower, choosing to scale either 54, 78, 92, or 110 floors in honour of the climbs made by their fellow firefighters inside of the World Trade Centre. 

The event was intended as a way to honour all of the firefighters and first responders who lost their lives on 9/11, ensuring that their courage and their sacrifice will never be forgotten. 

Next fall, student athletes in Oakville will have access to an exciting new program designed to address the challenges of integrating academics with athletics, as HDSB has just announced that the new high school currently under construction at 4020 Sixth Line and set to open September 2027 will feature APEX, the Academy for Athletic Performance and Excellence.

This specialty program is for competitive athletes, especially those who compete in their sport at the provincial or national level, and is built to address the unique scheduling challenges faced by these students. In addition to providing greater flexibility and support, the curriculum is designed to prepare students for potential post-secondary destinations and careers in the sports industry, with classes like Sports Management/Marketing and Kinesiology. 

Applications for the program will open at the end of October, and any Ontario secondary student is eligible to apply. Info sessions will soon be available in-person and online for interested students and families.

The volunteer team behind Art In My Garden had two rain dates scheduled in case of emergency, but no back-up plan was needed when the much-anticipated event kicked off at noon on Saturday. The sky was just one more bright and beautiful canvas to admire, creating perfect conditions for Oakville’s sixth annual outdoor art gallery. 

Approximately 70 local artists set up temporary exhibits around the yards and gardens of historic Old Oakville. Painters, sculptors, mixed media artists, and more were featured in the transaction-free event which focused on celebrating art rather than selling it. In between appreciating the work on display, patrons could participate in an interactive “stamp hunt” or make special letterpress bookmarks, and the garden outside of Erchless Estate offered space and painting materials to anyone who wanted to make art of their own.  

It was certainly inspiring to see all of the creativity that lives here in Oakville, as well as the enthusiastic support from the community. It’s no wonder the sun was shining down on such a beautiful display!

The first thing you notice about Corey are his wise brown eyes. They’re the kind of eyes that seem to have a story behind them. But if Corey could tell the story it would be simple: “I would like some treats, please!”

The two year old male toy poodle is certainly food motivated, but like all foodies he’s sociable too, warming up to new people quickly, especially when they offer him praise and attention. He’s friendly with other dogs, as well as dog-savvy cats, but when it comes to potential human roommates Corey would do best if they’re all at least 10 years old and able to understand some of his quirkier behaviour. Namely his anxious habit of attempting to door dash or squeeze through small gaps in a fence. 

Corey is hoping to find someone who will make him feel safe and cozy in their home, and who will be patient with him as he builds his confidence. He came to the HSOMH as a stray, so his full story is something that can only be guessed at, but he can’t wait to meet the person or family who will be in every future chapter!
