Late September means that it’s officially harvest time in Ontario, and Bronte Creek Provincial Park is celebrating the season with some historical flair, as their annual Harvest Festival is set to take place this weekend (September 26th and September 27th). 

Much like farmers did 100 years ago, Friends of Bronte Creek Park is inviting everyone to the historic Spruce Lane Farm for freshly pressed apple cider, wagon rides, and the chance to pick a pumpkin from the still-growing field. The farmhouse will be open for tours, and park staff will be dressed in historical attire to perform farm life demonstrations, so the whole weekend promises to be some good old-fashioned fall fun!    

Downtown Oakville is adding an autumnal twist to one of their most popular events, bringing back Shop the Street for its first ever fall edition this weekend (September 26th and 27th). Just like the traditional Shop the Street that typically happens in June, this upcoming weekend Lakeshore businesses and shops will display their wares outside, creating a fun outdoor market experience. 

Some stores will offer exclusive deals and promotions, and the whole street will have a vibrantly charming atmosphere. The Shop the Street tradition is to “discover, stroll, and shop local”, and now with the fall edition you can do all of that while also sipping something pumpkin spiced and wearing a light jacket!

Fire Prevention Week runs October 4 to 10 in Oakville, an initiative put on by the Oakville Fire Department to promote fire safety education, and the whole community is invited to participate in the big kick-off event that will be held on Saturday September 26th from 11am-4pm at the Oakville Fire Training Campus. 

Kids can meet Sparky the Fire Dog, explore the fire trucks, and participate in the junior firefighter challenge. Adults will have the less free-wheeling but certainly important option to learn more about testing smoke alarms, in advance of Test Your Smoke Alarm Day on Monday. The event will also feature free hot dogs, so all attendees will surely agree that fire safety is something to celebrate!

The Oakville Museum is dedicated to sharing Oakville’s stories, and they’ve recently partnered with Sheridan College to make those stories fresh and accessible to new audiences. The first project of that partnership, “History in the Landscape”, was revealed last week on the Museum’s social media channels. 

Created by students from Sheridan’s internationally recognized Visual Communication Studio, the animated short traces the winding history of the Old Post Office. It’s done in a striking black and white style, and the landmark’s lore unfolds through subtitles. 

More student works are scheduled to be shared in the weeks to come, so we’ll soon get to see how other parts of Oakville’s history are creatively interpreted and portrayed!

Oak-land Ford Lincoln is getting a head start on giving season with Load The Lincoln, the food collection initiative they’re hosting this month in support of Food4Kids Halton. They’re asking the community to help them pack every inch of the vehicle with much-needed non-perishable food items like condensed soup, macaroni & cheese, and nut-free granola bars. 

Bringing a donation down to Oak-Land Ford (located at 570 Trafalgar Road) earns you a chance to win two tickets to October 13’s Raptors game against the NBA Champion Knicks, but most importantly it helps provide assistance to more than 1,200 local elementary students currently experiencing food instability.
