It’s time to tune your fiddles and don your plaid, because the Oakville Celtic Festival is back this weekend! The annual celebration of Celtic culture is happening September 26th & 27th at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre. 

Admission is free, and attendees will enjoy performances from Highland dance groups, fiddle orchestras, and other traditional music groups. There will be face painting and inflatable jousting for the kids, and flights of whiskey tastings for the 19+ crowd. Fun for everyone to get into the Celtic spirit!

Handmade gifts are always unique and heartfelt, but if you don’t have the time or inclination to make anything with your own hands help is on the way, because for the first time The Artisan Bazaar is coming to Oakville with a special Fall Craft Show at St. Volodymyr Event Centre this Saturday, September 26.

Oakville shoppers will get a first look at goods from over 80 creative makers, before the event moves onto Ancaster and Burlington for their usual Christmas shows. Jewellery, baked goods, ceramic ware, floral decor, and countless other crafts will be showcased, and the $5 cash only admission fee also gets visitors the chance to win door prizes. Bronte Heritage Waterfront Park has been quiet since the last “Lake Note” sounded to end the summer music series last month, but music will be in the air again soon. The JAM Roots and Rhythms Festival is set to take over the outdoor stage on Saturday, October 3rd with a free celebration of multicultural music that will play all day from 1pm to 8pm. 

There are currently nine scheduled acts bringing musical stylings of all sorts, including established professional talents as well as new and emerging artists. The event’s organizers passionately believe that the arts should be accessible to everyone, and they’re inviting music lovers of all ages and of every background to come enjoy the all day medley! 

At 89 years old, Naoko Matsubara is one of the world’s most celebrated woodcut print artists, and since the 1970s Oakville has been the site of both her home and her studio. Back in July, she was honoured with Japan’s Order of the Rising Sun, in recognition of her work and the way it represents the relationship between Canada and Japan. 

In a profile from this past weekend, the Toronto Star sat down with Matsubara in her Oakville studio to discuss the story of how she went from growing up in World War 2 Kyoto to studying art at Carnegie Mellon and having her woodcut prints celebrated in museums around the world. It’s a fascinating look at a singular life that has taken the artist many places, but only Oakville gets the honour of being Matsubara’s home!

Downtown Oakville has changed and evolved plenty over the years—in fact, it’s changing right now with the big Town Square renovations—but while other retailers have come and gone, there has been one fixture on the Lakeshore shopping scene: Barringtons. This past weekend, the iconic store celebrated its 75th anniversary!

Originally a furrier shop, Barringtons was founded by Robert Barrington in 1951 and the business continues to be family-run. Known for their outerwear and classic handbags, the family has seen all the ways that trends can shift and change, just like the landscape around the store. But since they opened their doors 75 years ago, Barringtons has accomplished the rare retail feat of never going out of style!
