Historic School Gets Another Chance ⚖️
Oakville council has voted to keep trying to save the old Trafalgar High School building on Reynolds Street, rejecting a staff recommendation that would have allowed most of the 1909 heritage structure to be demolished.
The former school has sat empty since 1992, and the town has spent more than four years trying to sell the three-acre site without success. Staff warned that restoring the building would cost more than $20 million, making the project unattractive to developers.
Council said no. The building stays, but the town will now allow a wider range of housing types and offer more flexibility on the planned civic square to sweeten the deal for potential buyers.
The next step now is to explore funding sources and report back early next year.
Rebecca Street Closes 7 Weeks 🚧
A stretch of Rebecca Street between Third Line and Fourth Line is closing July 2 for seven weeks as Halton Region upgrades wastewater infrastructure under its basement flooding mitigation program.
Detours will run along Third Line, Speers Road, and Fourth Line. Residents in the closure zone will still be able to access their driveways, though brief restrictions may be needed when crews work near individual properties.
Oakville Transit's 14 and 14A routes will detour temporarily, and emergency vehicles will have access throughout. The road is expected to reopen August 14.
OFFA Wraps Record Year 🎬
The Oakville Film Festival closed yesterday after two weeks, wrapping over 100 screenings with record attendance numbers and multiple sold-out shows. Thousands came to the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts and Film.Ca Cinemas for this year's lineup, which included two world premieres.
"This was our most attended year ever," said Executive Director Wendy Donnan. "It shows there's a growing demand for more events like this in Oakville."
The festival also held its first-ever screening in Burlington last week. The 14th annual event is expected to return next June, with the fall screening series starting up again in October.

Ribfest Weekend 🎉

Oakville Ribfest Instagram
Oakville Family Ribfest returned to Sheridan College this weekend with award-winning pitmasters from across North America competing over slow-smoked ribs, pulled pork, and brisket. The event opened Saturday with the 75-foot Ferris wheel, spinning teacups, and a kids' zone featuring soccer, trampolines, and face painting.
Local acts like The Neil MacNaughton Band and the Oakville Choir for Children and Youth performed throughout the weekend. Beyond ribs, vendors served Jamaican jerk chicken, grilled squid, and sugar cane juice at the marketplace.
The festival wrapped Sunday at 7 p.m., with proceeds supporting local, national, and international charities. Until next year!
Belchetz Goes 17th in NHL Draft 🏆
Oakville's Ethan Belchetz was drafted 17th overall by the Utah Mammoth at the 2026 NHL Draft in Buffalo on Saturday, making him the third player from town to go in the first round this decade.
Belchetz told reporters he had about 50 people in attendance, including high school classmates and former Oakville Rangers teammates. He recorded 59 points in 57 games before an injury ended his season early.
He'll suit up for Michigan State University next season before joining a Utah prospect pool that includes three players from the recent World Juniors roster. Congrats Ethan!
