Anyone who’s walked by Towne Square recently has seen the colourfully festive sidewalk art that signals the fact that Oakville’s second annual Acorn Fest is nearly here, and now Downtown Oakville has released the official live event schedule, so the countdown is officially on!

The fall fun starts this Friday, October 2nd, kicked off by a performance from country-bluegrass group Duke Street Turnaround and followed by an outdoor screening of the first Harry Potter movie. More country jams will fill the air on Saturday, October 3rd when DJ Jan controls the dials, and then everyone can get into the banjo spirit with line dancing lessons courtesy of Fred Astaire Dance Studios. 

With all that entertainment, the fest is promising to be an acorn-ucopia of fun!

If you’ve been reading The Oakville Digest or keeping up with our events page, you know that there’s a lot going on in Oakville this October, and one consequence of all that activity is that there will soon be some roads closed. 

George Street will be shut down for Acorn Fest on October 3rd, and then parts of Lakeshore and Bronte Roads will close October 4th for the Oakville Half Marathon, along with some neighbourhood streets. Construction projects will affect Westminster Drive and Margaret Drive between October 5th-9th, and a stretch of Sherin Drive will be inaccessible for all of October due to scheduled wastewater main improvements. 

Plan your detours accordingly!

Today, September 30th, is our National Day For Truth & Reconciliation, a solemn day dedicated to reflecting on the enduring effects of the residential school system. This statutory holiday is observed across the country, and today many Oakville groups and organizations will hold events to honour the ideas behind Truth & Reconciliation. 

Grandmother’s Voice, the Indigenous Women-led collective will be holding their annual “Walk To Remember The Children” in Bronte Creek Provincial Park at 11:30 am. Film.ca will host afternoon and evening screenings of Aki, a documentary about the beauty found in a Northern Ontario First Nations community, with a portion of ticket proceeds going to Save The Children. Finally, Veronica Johnny & The Johnny’s will take the stage at the Oakville Centre of the Arts for a free night of Indigenous-led rock’n’roll.    

We love featuring many of the furry characters that come through the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton, & Halton in our Pet Spotlight—a feature we’re delighted to know has inspired at least one reader to rescue a deserving animal— and this weekend, the decision to adopt will be made even simpler, because HSOMH has been selected to participate in the Mars Global Adoption Weekend. 

From October 2nd through October 4th, adoption fees will be completely covered by Mars/Pedigree for a selection of the shelter’s pets. The standard application and screening process will still be in effect, but by removing the financial burden it will be easier to find loving homes for more animals. That’s definitely something worth putting a spotlight on! 

Millions of Canadians are living with arthritis, and many are far younger than what the disease is stereotypically associated with. Edna Gelinski was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis and has been living with the condition for 35 years, but it hasn’t slowed her down. In fact, she’s spent the past month committing to 30 minutes of daily movement as part of the MOVE with Arthritis Fundraising Challenge. 

Edna’s story is one of optimistic perseverance, from her diagnosis as a child growing up in Brazil to learning how to navigate her treatment as an adult here in Canada. She doesn’t take her ability to move for granted, and she credits arthritis research for her ability to live an active lifestyle. Through her fundraising she wants to help create “better treatments and better lives” for others!
