The field of candidates competing for Oakville’s top job got a little more crowded last Friday afternoon when longtime mayor Rob Burton submitted his nomination papers right before the deadline. 

The addition of Burton’s candidacy makes the upcoming October 26th election a five-way race. He will be running against two of his former colleagues, sitting councillors Jeff Knoll and Sean O’Meara, as well as first-time challenger Arvind Chaudry, and Julia Hanna who has competed in the mayoral race twice before.

Already Oakville’s longest-serving mayor, Burton is seeking to hold onto a seat he’s had since 2006. At least six of Oakville’s 14 ward councillor seats will be filled by new faces this election, due to the decision not to run by three incumbents, the choice to run for mayor in the cases of Knoll and O’Meara, and the untimely passing of Marc Grant. Whether or not there will also be a change at the top will be up to Oakville’s voters to decide.

The Oakville GO Station is still in the early stages of a major renovation that is set to transform its architecture, infrastructure, and the overall experience of its customers, but an update earlier this month seems to be a hopeful sign of progress. GO Transit states that the work being done in the station’s southeast pick-up/drop-off location, currently inaccessible due to the construction, is expected to be completed in September. 

The extensive project to upgrade the Oakville GO began back in May, and so far no timetable has been provided for its completion. The plans involve new platforms and shelters, a new pedestrian bridge to connect platforms and parking shelters, along with various parking lot improvements. 

The Oakville GO Station is the busiest hub on the Lakeshore West line, with more than 10,000 customers passing through each day, so updates to the renovations are being closely followed by many.   

The Town of Oakville recently received $125,000 from the Government of Canada’s Enabling Accessibility Fund to improve the Falgarwood Community Pool. 

The outdoor pool, first built in 1972, will soon see a portable pool lift installed, as well as new step-free outdoor showers, and a new slip-resistant outdoor pool deck. These projects are in addition to other recent accessibility improvements undertaken by the Town at the Falgarwood facility, like the wider entrance and more inclusive change rooms. 

The new construction is set to begin this fall, once the outdoor pool closes for the season.

The dog days of summer will stretch into September this year when the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton, & Halton is set to host their annual “Doggie Dip” fundraiser. 

The Oakville event will be held at Lions Pool on September 13th from 11am to 5pm. 30 minute swim sessions will be offered in the full-sized pool with stairs that allow dogs to get in and out of the water safely. There will also be a “Barkin’ Market” on site, featuring dog-approved treats and apparel. 

Interested parties and pups are encouraged to register now to secure a spot and support the important work being done by the HSOMH! 

It’s a story of last-minute inspiration and legitimate ingenuity. A group of Sheridan College students have developed an extended reality system that could help firefighters and first responders operate more effectively in low-visibility environments. 

Their project, known as “Ember” came out of a crunch time decision to attend a Hackathon in Waterloo last March. With the topic of Canadian wildfires on their minds and a pair of AR/VR glasses coincidentally on hand, the students began to think about how technology might be better embedded in firefighting equipment. 

The resulting product was later named a top-three project at the Google Solution Challenge North America Demo Day, and the team will soon demonstrate their work in front of Google Engineers in Manhattan. The students credit the community they’ve found at Sheridan for providing the spark that can turn into impactful ideas like Ember.
