Oakville Council Rejects Plan For Vacant Home Tax 🏠

Town of Oakville

Last week Council voted to abandon a proposed plan to implement a new tax on Oakville homes deemed vacant

The plan, which would have involved a tax rate of 1.0% of the vacant property’s assessed value, was intended to address issues around housing supply. Similar programs have been instituted in Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, Guelph, Windsor, and Sault Ste. Marie.

However Council found that the cost of implementing and administering such a plan was too high to justify, particularly given the uncertain revenue that any Vacant Home Tax would bring in. Only an estimated 332 residential units are currently believed to be vacant in Oakville.

$891k From Province Directed Towards Traffic Safety Measures 🚦

Following the province-wide deactivation of the controversial automated speed enforcement cameras last November, the Town of Oakville has received $891 274 from the Ontario Government, money that Council has voted to direct towards a variety of road safety and traffic calming measures

The Town has 25 former ASE sites, where there are now plans to add radar speed display signs along with other improvements which will vary by location.

The money comes from the province’s Road Safety Initiative, which was created after the speed cameras were banned. This initial amount is considered immediate interim funding, and Oakville is eligible to apply for an additional $3.5 million.

Cudmore House Retains Heritage Designation 📍

An application to repeal the Heritage Designation on the property at 3175 Lakeshore Road West, known as “Cudmore House” was rejected by Oakville’s Town Council, and so its protected status will remain in effect.

The Bronte area house is celebrated for being representative of the Dutch Colonial Revival architectural style, and for its association with the Cudmore Family who farmed the land for nearly 100 years and played an important role in Bronte’s development.

The original application to remove the Heritage Designation claimed that this status would make future renovations more complicated and thus alienate potential buyers. However since the request was submitted the home has changed owners, and the real estate agent involved describes the new Cudmore House steward as someone with “plans to restore rather than renovate.”

Duelling Pianos Coming To Oakville 🎹

Instagram post

A uniquely high-energy and interactive form of entertainment is coming to Towne Square this Saturday when the Great Canadian Duelling Pianos are scheduled to perform as part of Oakville’s TD Summer Music Series.

Toronto-based duo Joel Lightman and Donovan LeNabat have performed at plenty of weddings, events and celebrations, and even in front of a national TV audience for Canada’s Got Talent, and now they’re bringing their elite piano skills and creative free-styling to Oakville.

The playlist they’ll perform will be largely put together through requests from the audience, so whether your tastes lean classic rock or classic Disney, all are invited to ask for a song to be sung by these Piano Men.

Let The Oakville Public Library Find Your Next Read 📚

Given the many millions of books that are currently out there in the world, it can sometimes be daunting to decide just what to read next. Thankfully the knowledgeable staff of the Oakville Public Library have created a resource to better guide that decision-making process with their “OPL Picks For You” initiative

Interested bookworms of all ages are asked to fill out a short online questionnaire about their reading preferences, including their formats and genres of choice, along with which voices they would like to see represented. After submitting a request, OPL staff work to put together a personally curated package of up to five books, or a personalized recommendation list.

Materials are available in regular or large print, as well as CD audio format, which means that all kinds of readers can take advantage of this book-matching service.
