Access To Lions Valley Park Temporarily Limited ⛔️

Oakville Digest

Heads up to all hikers and anyone with end-of-summer picnic plans: the Lions Valley parking lot will be closed for the next two weeks due to paving work being done on the lot and the driveway. The nearby Knox Church parking lot that is sometimes used for overflow parking will be closed for paving too.

The extensive Lion’s Valley trails will still be accessible to pedestrians through the various trail entrances around the Sixteen Mile Creek valley, but no picnic pavilions will be available to book while the paving project is in progress.

Paving is expected to be complete Thursday, September 3rd, or possibly sooner if the paving and line painting are finished before the target date.

More Info For Upcoming Municipal Election 🗳️

Now that the deadline to submit nomination papers has passed, the list of candidates set to compete in Oakville’s upcoming October 26th municipal election is complete

In addition to the race for Mayor covered in Monday’s Oakville Digest, there will be elections for Town Councillors and Town and Regional Councillors to represent each of Oakville’s seven wards, as well as elections for Halton District School Board and Halton Catholic District School Board Trustees.

Advance voting will take place October 7th to 10th, and October 13th to 18th.

Oakville Hockey Star Commits To University of Michigan 🏒

Anyone who has watched Dima Zhilkin play hockey knows that great things are in store for the 17 year old Oakville native. This past weekend marked an important milestone in the course of the career he is currently charting, when Zhilkin officially committed to the University of Michigan for the 2027-2028 season.

The current captain of the Saginaw Spirit, Zhilkin was one of the top players in the OHL last season, tallying 75 points in 59 games. He was also selected to represent Canada at the U-18 World Hockey Championships.

Most experts expect that Zhilkin will be a top 10 pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. Playing with the University of Michigan Wolverines marks an important next chapter in what promises to be an exciting hockey career.

Oakville Blades Searching For Next Anthem Singer 🎤

Instagram post

Who’s ready to belt out O Canada? The Oakville Blades are searching for their next anthem singer ahead of the upcoming 2026/27 season

The team is looking for a talented, confident, and enthusiastic vocalist to perform the national anthem before each home game. Whoever wins this role will have the important job of kicking off each game with energy and some “true patriot love”.

Interested singers are asked to submit their demo reels to the Blades via email. The search for the next “Blades Idol” begins now!

Full Moon Ceremony Tonight 🌕

In preparation for Friday’s Full Moon, a ceremony is set to be held at the Oakville Museum tonight, hosted by Grandmother’s Voice, a local Indigenous-led collective

The August full moon, alternately known as the Sturgeon moon, is considered especially important because it marks the beginning of the transition from summer to fall. The ceremony will honour the freshness of the season that is ending, as well as the preparations underway for the season ahead.

Guests are asked to bring lawn chairs or blankets to make participating in the circle more comfortable. The event promises a unique opportunity to learn and reflect under the light of the moon.
